tend to respond better if they are contacted by their loved ones instead of being contacted directly
by the company. In other words the response rate of viral marketing is greater than other targeted
methods of marketing.
Ease
It doesn’t take a great deal of effort to start a viral marketing campaign. All it takes is some creati
vity. A single email can be used to trigger a viral marketing campaign. At times though it can be
a little more complex as millions of emails, multimedia in the form of video clips, and interactive web
sites have to be used.
Costs
No better example can illustrate how cost effective and powerful viral marketing can be than that of Hot mail.
In just one and a half years of its launch, Hot mail had got a subscriber base of 12 million people, the
fastest growth of a company in corporate history. How much did it spend on advertising to acomplish that
feat? Not more than $500, yes you read it right, not more than five hundred dollars! Its closest rival had
spent a hooping $20 million to get just a tiny fraction of that.
Using the web, budgets can be low, as most of the marketing is done through email, or an existing website.
After an inital push, the marketing is propagating itself, either by being entertaining to the recipient enough to
pass it on, or give them a reason (e.g an affiliate scheme) to pass it on.
